King Alfred Education

I took lessons with Roger from the age of 12 to 18. I primarily studied English and History with him. Whilst I was in lower school, Roger stimulated and developed my interest in the English language by encouraging me to read a wide range of literature, and taught me how to analyse the different styles of well-known authors whilst attempting to write my own stories. Every lesson would include a vocabulary test, which ensured that my vocabulary gradually expanded at a steady rate. Moreover, with Roger’s help, I was awarded an academic scholarship at Sevenoaks School, and I also achieved an A* in both the English and History IGCSEs. 

Thereafter, Roger helped me to prepare for my IB exams. Specifically, he would guide me in terms of how to revise efficiently, and conduct research properly and thoroughly; he provided oral and written feedback for many of my essays, and often he would attempt a specific question or past paper with me so as to provide a good model answer for my reference. Throughout my time at secondary school, Roger constantly emphasised the importance of reading widely and regularly. He gave me around ten to twenty short stories, academic articles, novellas to read as homework every week, as well as comprehensive reading lists covering all topics, which not only improved my English, but also expanded my general knowledge on history, politics, religion, culture etc. Having achieved 45/45 in my IB exams (including 7/7 in Higher Level English and History), I am now reading Law at the University of Cambridge. 

The level of commitment Roger has towards his students can rarely be found in many educational institutions today. He always makes sure that his students are focussed and making progress, and that they are working towards the goals they wish to achieve.

I was Roger’s student from the age of 11 to 18. I studied History and English with him, and his commitment towards improving my academic skills have been invaluable. Under his guidance, my grades improved dramatically, and I consequently came top in History at Chinese International School, achieving the highest grade (7) in the International Baccalaureate exams, even scoring higher than the usual best students at my school.

When I was in secondary school, Roger primarily taught me English, while also slowly stimulating my interest in history. He encouraged me to read widely, introducing me to writers, books and short stories that I would not have been introduced to in school. Furthermore, he gave me weekly vocabulary tests, which gave me a better command over vocabulary and grammar, a skill that proved crucial in the IB.

I stopped taking lessons with Roger for over a year, when I was in a moment of crisis and desperation, and my performance consequently faltered. But I rejoined Roger towards the end of Year 12. And it was his stern disciplinarian approach that put me back on track: He also got me back into the habit of reading again, expanded my range of subject matter, and even bought essential textbooks to fill the gaps in my knowledge. Furthermore, we covered an innumerable number of essays and past papers, where he consistently gave me comprehensive feedback to work on. As a result, my research, writing, and analytical skills drastically improved, giving me the decisive edge over my peers in the IB final exams.

Thanks to Roger, I am now studying History at the University Exeter, ranked the fourth best university for the subject in the U.K., as of 2018. I am incredibly grateful to have been his student. The levels to which Roger goes to for his students are rarely seen in other tutors in Hong Kong, ensuring that his students do not just improve, but achieve the highest scores at school and go on to top universities and careers.

Dear Roger,

I really need to thank you for all the time and effort you have put in for me to get the King's Scholarship. Without you, I would not have gotten the King's Scholarship.

I found your lessons on creative writing particularly useful, without them I would not have gotten an A* for my English. For example, in the Eton King's Scholarship English Paper, there was a creative writing section worth 40 points - with your creative writing techniques that you drilled into me, describing a journey was but a piece of cake due to your efforts in honing perfect technique in me.

In addition, your comprehensive essay materials have helped me a lot during the General Paper IL When the essay topic "Is democracy the best form of government? Explain your answer" appeared, I knew exactly what to do because you had taught me everything I needed to know for this topic; we had revised for this all along because you had predicted that maybe such a topic would appear.

Not only that, but you have also given me good advice for the General Paper I. You said that I should revise some code-breaking, and there was a code-breaking section in the paper after all!

Honestly, without you, I would not get the King Scholarship; here is but a humble token of my appreciation of all that you have done for me.

I feel that the detailed feedback you give me for all the comprehension, essay and creative writing questions I have done have led to a significant improvement in my writing, especially in terms of structure. The readings which you give me every week, ranging from fictional short stories to articles about history, art and travel have not only expanded my vocabulary, and have trained me to read everything with an analytical mind, but perhaps most significantly improved my love for English and History. This has in turn led me to choose these two subjects at Higher Level for the IB.

Now that all university offers have been confirmed, I am very pleased to inform you that I have accepted an offer to study BA History at University College London, starting this September.

I am also happy to inform you that I was able to attain level 7/7 for History in my IB exams and, after remarking, managed to get 42/45 overall.

I have also resumed my habit of reading every day after the exams, and have developed an interest in Roman history, which I hope to study in my first year of university.
